Orphaned baby rhinos find hope at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary

Rescued from the devastation of poaching, orphaned baby rhinos are finding new hope at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, where they can regain their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. In this PeaceParks.TV episode, we learn more about the journey of orphaned rhinos – from tragedy to hope – through the important work being done at the sanctuary. Rescue operations usually start with a call from rangers, at a wildlife crime scene. Orphaned babies are often found close by, injured by poachers or predators, on top of dealing with the recent loss of their parents. “The sadness these animals go through – the fear, the pain, the trauma, the shock – sometimes collides. A deep understanding and empathy towards what they’re going through is necessary,” says Petronel Nieuwoudt, Founder and CEO of Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary. Once admitted to the sanctuary, the rhinos receive expert veterinary care, good nutrition, stress management and constant care from a dedicated team. Thanks to generous funding from organisations like Animal Friends Pet Insurance, and in collaboration with Peace Parks Foundation, the sanctuary continues its mission to restore a thriving rhino population.
