Welcome to Professor Akansha’s Medicinal Chemistry Series 👩🏫 In this lecture, we understand *Optical Isomerism* and its importance in biological action. --- 🔬 Definition Optical isomerism is a type of stereoisomerism in which compounds have: • Same molecular formula • Same structural formula • Different spatial (3D) arrangement of atoms These compounds rotate plane polarized light in opposite directions and are called **optical isomers or enantiomers**. Same structure but different 3D arrangement → Different fitting to receptor → Different biological response. --- 📌 Conditions for Optical Activity ✔ At least one asymmetric carbon (C*) ✔ No plane of symmetry ✔ Non-superimposable mirror images --- 💊 Effect on Biological Action Biological systems are **chiral in nature**: • Receptors • Enzymes • Proteins Therefore, different optical isomers produce different biological effects. --- ✔ One Isomer May Be Active • Other may be less active or inactive ✔ Difference in Potency • One may be more potent ✔ Difference in Toxicity • One may be safe • Other may be toxic ✔ Difference in Metabolism • Different rate of metabolism • Different elimination rate --- 🧪 Important Pharmaceutical Examples Adrenaline • L-form more active than D-form Thalidomide • R-isomer → Sedative • S-isomer → Teratogenic (birth defects) Levodopa • L-form → Active • D-form → Inactive --- 🎯 Why This Topic is Important? ✔ Frequently asked in university exams ✔ Important for GPAT & NIPER ✔ High scoring theoretical question ✔ Strong concept for viva --- 🔔 Subscribe & Follow 📺 Subscribe: [ / @professorakansha ]( / @professorakansha ) 📸 Instagram: [ / professorakansha ]( / professorakansha ) Like 👍 Comment 💬 Share 🔁 Subscribe 🔔 --- optical isomerism medicinal chemistry, enantiomers pharmacy, chiral drugs, asymmetric carbon medicinal chemistry, optical activity pharmacy, stereoisomerism bpharm, optical isomerism biological action, L form vs D form drugs, adrenaline enantiomers activity, thalidomide R and S isomer, levodopa optical isomerism, medicinal chemistry semester 4, professor akansha pharmacy, GPAT medicinal chemistry optical isomerism, pharmacy exam important topic, enantiomers pharmacological activity, chiral receptors drug action, medicinal chemistry lecture, optical isomerism exam questions, pharmacy mcqs optical isomerism, pharmacological differences enantiomers, optical isomers examples drugs, stereochemistry pharmacy topic, medicinal chemistry important chapter, drug potency enantiomers, drug toxicity optical isomerism, drug metabolism stereochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry lecture, optical isomerism simplified, pharmacy theory class --- #OpticalIsomerism #MedicinalChemistry #BPharm #Chirality #Enantiomers #DrugAction #PharmacyStudents #ProfessorAkansha #GPATPrep #NIPERPrep #PharmaLife #SemesterIV #PharmacyEducation #Stereochemistry #StudyPharmacy#Physicochemical Properties in relation to biological action --- optical isomerism medicinal chemistry, enantiomers biological action, L vs D form drugs pharmacy, asymmetric carbon stereochemistry, thalidomide R S isomer difference, adrenaline optical isomer activity, levodopa L form active, medicinal chemistry BPharm semester IV, stereochemistry GPAT important topic, pharmacy exam optical isomerism questions ---
