SECURENET 2026 | Security & Privacy in Open RAN: Challenges and Management | Prof. An Braeken

In this presentation at SECURENET 2026, Professor An Braeken from Vrije Universiteit Brussel addresses the emerging security and privacy challenges in Open RAN (O-RAN) architectures. Open RAN represents a major shift from proprietary radio access networks toward virtualised, disaggregated systems built on open interfaces and COTS hardware. While this openness enables innovation through RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) and third-party rApps and xApps, it also significantly expands the attack surface and introduces new risks related to multi-stakeholder environments and increased system complexity. This talk provides a concise overview of O-RAN and its key security and privacy challenges, and introduces a lightweight hierarchical management approach for secure onboarding, authorisation, and monitoring of third-party applications.
