These beautiful Spotted Galaxias were filmed in a freshwater creek on the Tasman Peninsula in eastern Tasmania. They are one of many species of small native galaxiids found in south-eastern Australia. I spent several very enjoyable hours sitting on the bank observing the fish, waiting for my cameras, squashing march flies and flicking them out to the hungry fish. The video was filmed in Novemeber 2022 but only edited recently. Sadly when I revisited the creek a year later in November 2023 there was no sign of any fish at all. The reason for their absence on this occasion is unknown; hopefully they will be present again in the future. There was some evidence of sedimentation in the creek – perhaps from upstream logging activities. Spotted or Trout Galaxias are one of the more common species of galaxiids in south-eastern Australia. Many other species are facing extinction from predation by introduced predatory trout, and habitat destruction by logging which threatens the cool clear streams in which they normally thrive. This is one of several videos showing the fish from this creek which I have now visited on a number of occasions. © Greg Wallis 2024 For more information on Spotted Galaxias see the Fishes of Australia website http://fishesofaustralia.net.au/home/...
