Bunia is the only survivor of a poaching ring that killed her entire chimpanzee family and made her a target for illegal wildlife trafficking in the DRC. She was rescued by the ICCN (Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature) and brought to JACK Sanctuary, where now her every need is being met by the founders Roxane and Franck Chantereau and their expert caretakers. Friends of JACK Primate Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) US nonprofit organization that raises awareness of the plight of primates and other endemic wildlife affected by the illegal wildlife trade in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
