http://richsoil.com/heat In this excerpt from the rocket mass heater dvd collection, Paul talks about the rocket mass heater that is in his office, which used to be a garage. The first step is to take a look at the construction of the heater. Timothy Ettridge, a resident of wheaton labs is shown in the early stages of fitting the bench and sheet metal together. We get a chance to see the materials being brought into the work area. There's a truckload or two of stones that will act as the mass for the heater. Paul explains that this heater will have two exhaust points. One exhaust will go out through the roof, while the other one will go through the wall. With the aid of a bypass valve, the operator will have the option of which vent to send the flue gasses through. Then we get a little look at the process of adding the cob. In order to get the cob dried a little quicker, Paul pulls out his handy hair dryer. This makes it possible to work faster without compromising on the strength of the cob. Next, a section of roof insulation is removed to make way for the chimney that exits through the roof. Ducting, flanges and sheet metal heat reflectors are installed so as to make things nice and safe as well as functional. Then ew go up on the roof and start cutting out the space for the chimney to pass through. In this case a reciprocating saw is your new best friend. Some folks call it a sawsall... cuz it saws through everything. Some of the shingles around the hole are then loosened so that the sheet metal flange can be added to the roof, secured and then waterproofed. A portion of the insulation is then replaced while the ducting and vent pieces are placed in their final orientation. The wooden bench is then partly filled with the stones and pea gravel as a base for the rest of the ducting to rest on. In the meantime, the hole is cut into the exterior wall to accommodate the vent that will pass through it. Sheet metal heat reflectors are installed to protect the wall from the heat as well as drafts from outside. The remaining ducting is set up in the bench and the remaining gravel is then added to finish off the mass portion of the heater. Ernie and Erica Wisner, along with the big goof himself (Paul) can be seen getting to work and having some fun shaping the ducting as well as carefully adding gravel and stones. This hould be done with care to prevent uneven placement of ducting, which can have a huge impact on the rocket mass heater's performance. Once everything is in place, the seams of the ducting are sealed with heat resistant foil tape. Then the chimney vents are connected and the barrel is added to the manifold and heat riser. The final layer of pea gravel is added and some extra bracing is put in place to prevent the mass from pushing the walls of the bench out. Some sheet metal shielding is added one inch away from the wall to protect it from the radiant heat of the rocket mass heater. Once all of the final bits are in place, Ernie starts a small fire in the heater, to help test it as well as to begin the drying process of the cob. This rocket mass heater has been in operation for three winters now, and with a few modifications, it's really beginning to prove itself as a super efficient way to heat Paul's office, garage.
