His shows, full of momentum and intuition, perfectly represent the idea that the best jazz needs to be experienced live” - The New York Times. Charles Lloyd is an NEA Jazz Master and recipient of the prestigious French honor, l’Ordre Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. Voted Down Beat magazine’s Jazzman of the year in 1967, Lloyd was again voted the 2023 Artist of the Year for his current body of work – the arc of his contribution to this artform starts in the early 1960s – the depth of his expression reflects a lifetime of experience. Lloyd has a legendary history in the music world, and could certainly be in a position to slow down and rest on his laurels. But looking back has never been of great interest to this tender warrior; “Go forward,” is his motto, as he keeps shifting to a higher, well calibrated gear. 34 year-old pianist Jason Moran has proven, after seven years on the estimable Blue Note Records, more than his brilliance as a performer. He’s established himself as a risk-taker, a seeker of new directions for jazz as a whole. Moran has performed as a sideman with such artists as Cassandra Wilson, Joe Lovano, Don Byron, Steve Coleman, Lee Konitz, Von Freeman, Ravi Coltrane, and Stefon Harris. He was the youngest honoree of the New Work Commission by the San Francisco Jazz Festival. As one of the most admired, accomplished bassists working in jazz today, Larry Grenadier has been praised as “a deeply intuitive” musician by The New York Times and as an instrumentalist with a “fluid sense of melody” by Bass Player magazine. Grenadier has created an expansive body of work in collaboration with many of the genre’s most inventive, influential musicians – from early days playing with sax icons Joe Henderson and Stan Getz to what has been decades performing alongside pianist Brad Mehldau. Eric Harland is without doubt already one of the most important drummers in jazz history. Wynton Marsalis discovered him at a workshop and offered him a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music. Since he has been in New York, he has developed into one of the best drummers, which is confirmed not only by Down Beat's readers' and critics' surveys (which already put him on a par with Max Roach, Roy Haynes or Elvin Jones), but also by numerous prizes and the list of musicians with whom he has recorded. 0:00 - Zoltan written by Charles Lloyd, Forest Farm Music, BMI 6:14 - Forest Flower; Sunrise, Sunset written by Charles Lloyd, Forest Farm Music, BMI Charles Lloyd - sax Jason Moran - piano Larry Grenadier - bass Eric Harland - drums Video – Frank Zerban Audio – Philipp Bernhardt #Victorsplaces #VictorVoytov #VictorVoytovjazz #jazzmusic #jazzinstrumental #music #workjazz #recordedliveinberlin #jazz #music #instrumentalmusic #bestofjazz #bestmusic #jazzzmusic #CharlesLloyd #JasonMoran #LarryGrenadier #EricHarland #saxophone #sax #saxjazz
