Wilma Lee Cooper, born Wilma Leigh Leary in 1921, became one of the most powerful voices in bluegrass and country gospel music. Known as the “First Lady of Bluegrass,” she and her husband Stoney Cooper created a legendary duo whose harmonies and heartfelt songs echoed across the WWVA Jamboree and the Grand Ole Opry. With classics like “Walking My Lord Up Calvary Hill,” “Thirty Pieces of Silver,” and “Come Walk With Me,” Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper stood as guardians of traditional mountain music, refusing to compromise for the polished “Nashville Sound.” After Stoney’s passing in 1977, Wilma Lee carried on as a solo artist, her voice embodying resilience, faith, and authenticity. In 2001, her remarkable performing career ended abruptly when she suffered a stroke on the Opry stage. She passed away in 2011 at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy that shaped generations of artists from Dolly Parton to Alison Krauss. This video tells the story of Wilma Lee Cooper’s life, love, struggles, and her role as a trailblazer for women in bluegrass and country music. 👉 Watch now to discover the voice, the courage, and the enduring legacy of one of country music’s most unforgettable pioneers. #WilmaLeeCooper #StoneyCooper #BluegrassMusic #FirstLadyOfBluegrass #GrandOleOpry #CountryMusicHistory #GospelBluegrass #AppalachianMusic #TraditionalCountry #WWVAJamboree #ClassicBluegrass #WomenInBluegrass #DollyParton #AlisonKrauss #CountryMusicLegends
