Recorded on September 30th, 1917 in Naples (Phonotype record 1819 M). To listen to De Lucia is to hear the last echoes of 19th Century Belcanto.......... a beautiful duet, brought gloriously to life by the unhurried thoughtfulness of a fine musical intelligence infused with warmth, dignity and sfumando elegance.......... In the duet from Lucia with Angela de Angelis, Fernando de Lammermoor takes Lucia's first words, "Verranno a te sull'aure". I love his phrasing in that lingering, self-conscious way..........his "sospiri ardEEEeeenti" ("my ardent sighs", the voice begins to glow suggestively), his ability to hold the moment: "memO _ ria vi _ va sEmpre, o cA _ ra". With De Lucia you remember words. Callas is the ultimate Lucia for me; but De Lucia here is a surprise for me because probably like a lot people I have in my aural memory the aria with Di Stefano. And I am soooooo tired of bellowing tenors, I can't tell you. De Lucia, Schipa, Gigli, these are the tenors I can listen to all day long. ------------------------------------- "Angela de Angelis (Napoli ? - ?) Debuttò nel 1902 al Garibaldi di Santa Maria Capua Vetere come Paolina in Poliuto. Si ritirò nel 1919 per dedicarsi all'insegnamento. She made her debut in 1902 at Garibaldi of Santa Maria Capua Vetere as Paolina in Poliuto. After her withdraw, in 1919, she devoted her to teaching." From: http://www.lavoceantica.it/Soprano/De... ------------------------------------- Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic opera by Gaetano Donizetti. Salvadore Cammarano wrote the Italian language libretto loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's historical novel "The Bride of Lammermoor". The story concerns the emotionally fragile Lucy Ashton (Lucia) who is caught in a feud between her own family and that of the Ravenswoods. The setting is the Lammermuir Hills of Scotland (Lammermoor) in the 17th century. Act 1. By a fountain at the entrance to the park, beside the castle. Edgardo enters; for political reasons, he must leave immediately for France. He hopes to make his peace with Enrico and marry Lucia. Lucia tells him this is impossible, and instead they take a sworn vow of marriage and exchange rings: "Ah! verranno a te sull'aure" (Edgardo, Lucia). Edgardo leaves. -------------------------------------
