The Bismarck, one of the largest and most powerful battleships ever built, embarked on her first and only mission, Operation Rheinübung, in May 1941. Alongside the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, Bismarck set sail from Gotenhafen to disrupt British supply lines. She was soon spotted by British reconnaissance, and the Royal Navy launched a relentless pursuit. In the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Bismarck sank HMS Hood, the pride of the British fleet, and damaged HMS Prince of Wales. However, she sustained minor damage herself and became a top priority for British forces. After a daring torpedo attack from a Swordfish biplane disabled her rudder, Bismarck was cornered by British battleships Rodney and King George V. On May 27, 1941, after enduring over 400 hits and intense bombardment, her crew scuttled the ship to prevent capture. Out of over 2,200 crew members, only 114 survived. Bismarck’s sinking marked the end of an era for battleships, cementing her place in naval history as a symbol of both formidable strength and tragic loss.
