Moore Park Golf Club is fighting plans of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore to increase public parkland by reducing the course from 18 holes to nine. Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney Jess Scully told Sky News the rapidly expanding inner city area is too populated to warrant an 18 hole golf course. Ms Scully said, "this was granted to the people of Sydney as the Sydney commons for public recreation use and in 1913 forty hectares were sliced off for one sport. In 2020 is that still the fairest use of land? President of Moore Park Golf Club John Janik told Sky News, “we haven’t got the funds like the City of Sydney to go and promote it like they can so we’re relying a lot on members and a lot of media publicity to try and get the story out there. “What we’re hearing from the other side, is the parks around here are packed, well you can have a look at the 43 acres around they’re empty, there’s no one on them, you don’t need any more land, just use those ones that are available. "Please keep the 18 holes, it’s meant for the people of Sydney, they’re entitled to play a championship golf course at affordable prices".
