Crete is the largest island in Greece. One of the best tips I can share for Eastern Crete is the mountain plateau of Lassithi. The road there from the villages of Agios Nikolaos, Malia or Hersonissos is impressive. The windmills with the beautiful high mountain peaks in the background are a beautiful sight. Other nice stops are Piskopiano, Koutouloufari, Kokkini Chani, Stalis and Elounda. Elounda is the most luxurious seaside resort on the island. I find the fishing village of Agia Pelagia very pleasant. It has a small boulevard and also beautiful cliffs from which you can jump. Heraklion is the capital of Crete. It is very busy here compared to other cities. Here you will find tavernas, shops and all kinds of archaeological museums. In addition, the best preserved Venetian fortress is located in Heraklion. Knossos is located five kilometers from Heraklion. Here you can admire remains of the great palace of King Minos. Agios Nikolaos is a bustling port town on the northeast coast of Crete. In the center is a freshwater lake called Voulismeni, 67 meters deep. In terms of restaurants you have a lot of choice here. North of Agios Nikolaos lies the island of Spinalonga. When you sail to this island by boat, the beautiful Venetian fortress immediately catches your eye. You can reach the island from the villages of Elounda and Plaka. In the southeast of Crete you will find the lively village of Mirtos. There is a friendly atmosphere where all residents and travelers feel at home. There is also a boulevard with cozy tavernas along the sea. Mirtos has a subtropical climate which is very special. So it is the warmest here on the entire island. The area of Crete is more than 8,300 square kilometers. Crete is located in the south of the Aegean Sea and forms the border with the Libyan Sea. The Minoans, the amazing and advanced Bronze Age civilization of Crete, also had a palace in Lasithi. The excavations of Kato Zakros are among the most recent begun in 1961. The excavations revealed a large and flourishing center of trade. The Death Gorge - so called because the Minoans laid their dead to rest in the caves high on the flanks of the cliffs, is part of the E4 and is a beautiful walking area. Vai beach is another spectacular destination. On the remote northeastern tip of the island lies not only a beautiful beach, but also a natural treasure. This is the largest palm grove in Europe - a beautiful sight. Kreta is het grootste eiland van Griekenland. Eén van de beste tips die ik kan delen voor Oost-Kreta is het bergplateau van Lassithi. De weg erheen vanuit de dorpen Agios Nikolaos, Malia of Chersonissos is indrukwekkend. Een prachtig gezicht zijn de windmolens met de prachtige hoge bergtoppen op de achtergrond. Hier vindt u taverna's, winkels en allerlei archeologische musea. Bovendien bevindt het best bewaarde Venetiaanse fort zich in Heraklion. Knossos ligt vijf kilometer van Heraklion. Hier kun je overblijfselen bewonderen van het grote paleis van koning Minos. Agios Nikolaos is een bruisende havenstad aan de noordoostkust van Kreta. In het centrum ligt een zoetwatermeer genaamd Voulismeni, 67 meter diep. Qua restaurants heb je hier veel keuze. Ten noorden van Agios Nikolaos ligt het eiland Spinalonga. Wanneer je per boot naar dit eiland vaart, springt meteen het prachtige Venetiaanse fort in het oog. Je kunt het eiland bereiken vanuit de dorpen Elounda en Plaka. In het zuidoosten van Kreta vindt u het levendige dorpje Mirtos. Er hangt een gemoedelijke sfeer waar alle bewoners en reizigers zich thuis voelen. Ook is er een boulevard met gezellige taverna's langs de zee. Mirtos heeft een subtropisch klimaat wat heel bijzonder is. Het is hier dus de warmste van het hele eiland. De oppervlakte van Kreta is ruim 8.300 vierkante kilometer. Kreta ligt in het zuiden van de Egeïsche Zee en vormt de grens met de Libische Zee. De Minoërs, de verbazingwekkende en geavanceerde beschaving van Kreta uit de Bronstijd, hadden ook een paleis in Lasithi. De opgravingen van Kato Zakros behoren tot de meest recente die in 1961 zijn begonnen. De opgravingen brachten een groot en bloeiend handelscentrum aan het licht. De Death Gorge – zo genoemd omdat de Minoërs hun doden te rusten legden in de grotten hoog op de flanken van de kliffen, maakt deel uit van de E4 en is een prachtig wandelgebied. Het Vai-strand is een andere spectaculaire bestemming. Op het afgelegen noordoostelijke puntje van het eiland ligt niet alleen een prachtig strand, maar ook een natuurlijke schat. Dit is het grootste palmenbos van Europa - een prachtig gezicht.
