Today, January 19th, is the birthday of Helena Freja Ramsay. She would be 23 but died in the 2018 Parkland High School shooting. She turned 17 one month before her death. As one biographer beautifully described, Helena was “a quiet person, an extraordinary soul” known for her faith, loyalty and kindness. Her compassionate heart led her to accept everyone, regardless of their quirks, to foster kittens, as many as a dozen at a time when needed, and to greet everyone she encountered with a welcoming smile. Born in England, she had an international awareness and focus, participating in United Nations Club, listening to k-pop, enjoying travel and trying new foods. She loved to make people laugh, she habitually looked out for others before herself, and she consistently encouraged and uplifted those around her. When the sound of gunfire erupted in the hallway, students in Helena’s Holocaust class took shelter. When bullets came through the classroom door, she and her best friend crouched behind a bookcase and Helena instructed her to use books as a shield. Helena’s friend survived. The killer bought the AR-15 style gun when he turned 18. He attacked Marjorie Stoneman one year later killing 17 and wounding 17. Despite his callous attitude toward his victims, he was recently granted life in prison rather than the death penalty. #sensiblegunlaws #HonorWithAction
