Conserving a 750-Year-Old Manuscript at the Boston Public Library

Do you know what it takes to conserve a 750-year-old manuscript at the Boston Public Library? The Associates of the Boston Public Library is an independent non-profit dedicated to preserving and promoting the BPL's Special Collections. We are proud to underwrite the salaries of 10 employees in BPL Special Collections, including Conservation Officer, Mary French. Mary co-curated the current Special Collections Lobby Display in the Central Library called 'Hands-On History: Conservation Stories from the Boston Public Library.' In this video, Mary walks us through the conservation treatment of 'The Life of St. Augustine,' a 15th-century manuscript. Check out this wonderful display of the art and science behind conservation from now till September 26, 2025, at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.
