This debate was held in January 2021. Dr Benjamin Smith talks in favour of machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and data science while Paul Moorshead talks about the downsides and costs to individuals and society from their use. One only has to look at the internet or pick up a newspaper to see the huge value being created by machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science right now. This makes it even more important for us to reflect on what we and these models are doing, quite often in the background and out of sight, and think about how we can do the right thing for ourselves, for our customers and for our companies, as well as for society more broadly. Both the Apple CEO, Tim Cook, and the European Commission President, Usula von der Leyen, have raised concerns over these issues in the first few weeks of 2021. Dr Smith and Paul speak from their personal experiences of using these tools in practice as well as considering their wider research into these powerful tools. The workings behind machine learning tools such as decision trees, random forests and neural networks are clearly explained and dissected by the presenters. There are even a few lines of Python code thrown in to help provide context. The practical applications such as autonomous vehicles (driverless cars), facial recognition and social media are covered and analysed. Problems around lack of data, extreme events and excess data are all covered. The key issue of racial and other biases and how they can be baked into machine learning algorithms are discussed. Lastly the societal harm which can arise from social media/news companies chasing likes and causing tunnel vision/echo chambers is stepped through including some potential solutions to more ethically balance the harm created against the profits made in this incredibly topical area. The presenters will be online during the premiere to hear your views and where possible to answer your questions.
