I'm a neurosurgeon and director of Marcus Neuroscience Institute, part of Baptist Health. What drove me into neurosciences and neurosurgery was the complexity of the human nervous system and the challenging nature, the precision, the discipline, and the skill that is required to treat these type of conditions. The importance of technology in the field of neuroscience is certainly amazing. We are very technologically driven as a specialty. However, as technology gives you power, it doesn't tell you what exactly to do with that power. So you still need the human element to direct the technology. Having said that, there are huge opportunities and developments in high frequency ultrasound, image guidance, robotics, neuroscience, that are going to affect the way we treat a lot of diseases in the near future. Quality of life is a daily part of that decision making in neurosurgery because the functional outcome is not always as the same as the physical outcome. In other words, preservation many times of a very important nerve is more important than removing the entire tumor and sacrifice the nerve. So in other words, there's a lot of decision making that needs to happen in order to guarantee or protect a good functional outcome from a quality of life standpoint. What sets Marcus Neuroscience Institute apart from other institutes is the fact that we are a true institute in the sense that we have neurology, neurosurgery, pain management, all under one roof. We have our own ICU, ORs. So we are separate in some ways from the main hospital. At the same time, that means that we are more team oriented. We treat patients in a very multidisciplinary fashion and we have a lot of technological support that most other places don't have.
