Reality of FMGs EXPOSED, Are IMGs Better, MBBS Abroad Ft. Dr. Vineet Gupta

Guest Suggestion Form: https://forms.gle/tbwi5MfmkwkTBMv49 In this episode of The Nachiket Bhatia Show, we have Dr. Vineet Gupta in conversation with Dr. Nachiket Bhatia Dr. Vineet Gupta is a renowned surgeon and leading FMGE educator with over 15 years of experience in clinical practice and teaching. An MS in General Surgery with a fellowship in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplant, he has received multiple Gold Medals for academic excellence. He has mentored lakhs of medical graduates, served over a decade as senior faculty at DBMCI, and is now a founding faculty at MIST. Dr. Gupta is dedicated to supporting FMGs with subject clarity, career guidance, and mentorship through every step of their journey. In this episode, Dr Vineet Gupta shares how a childhood split between an engineer brother and a doctor brother nudged him toward medicine, the thrill of sneaking into OTs as a third-year that sparked a lifelong love for surgery, the jolt of a turbulent first teaching flight to Bengaluru that taught him preparation, the 2016 leap from a secure government post to full-time teaching, and the simple math that helping 100 surgeons heals far more patients than wielding one scalpel alone. He walks us through why the FMGE licensing exam started in 2002 to check returning Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). The doctor breaks down the record-low 4 % pass rate of June 2014 and what made that paper so tough. Dr Gupta also explained the 2002 birth of the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) licensing exam, the 4 percent pass-rate crisis of 2014, why later papers moved from fact-recall to concept checks, how the still-pending NEXT exam was designed to give Indian and overseas graduates one common yardstick, and why equal standards must never create unequal hurdles for students who already overcome language, climate and food barriers. We also discuss: ▪️History of the FMG Exam ▪️Why the Government Makes Life Hard for FMGs ▪️Ukraine War: Students Caught in the Crossfire ▪️Why the FMGE Pass Rate Remains Low ▪️Indian Private Colleges vs Overseas Colleges Additionally, Dr. Gupta discusses the need for percentile-based cut-offs when an exam becomes unexpectedly difficult and highlights how collective FMG efforts once led to the withdrawal of a proposed three-year unpaid bond. He encourages FMGs to have confidence in their worth, urges policymakers to personally assess foreign campuses before forming opinions, and emphasises that saving one life protects many hopes and aspirations. This conversation is highly relevant for aspiring FMGs, medical educators, and health policy decision-makers looking for clarity on licensing exams, overseas education, and building a more supportive medical system. About the host: Dr. Nachiket Bhatia is an angel investor, 3x TEDx speaker, and motivational speaker. He was featured in TIMES 40 Under 40 and recognized by Forbes as a Top 10 Most Innovative CEO in 2020. He also supports startups through investments.
