It's known as the 'secret squirrel' area of the RNZAF and a CIS technician's skill is vital to ensure reliable communications in all situations. AJ is keen to work with computers and electronics so this is the perfect job for him to investigate. He is introduced to the CIS world by Nadia, who starts him off with a quick test on the phonetic alphabet - essential for all Air Force radio communications. Next Nadia arranges the simulation of a tactical exercise which includes putting up an 8m high communications antenna, the first thing to be done when out in the field. She also shows AJ how to set up satellite communications which allows the Air Force internet access wherever in the world they are. While he isn't able to drive it, AJ finds out about the remarkable Pinzgauer off road vehicle which can be deployed into any location and is transported to wherever required inside the Hercules. As Nadia explains, the role of a CIS technician has some great benefits, including international travel and the excitement and challenge of keeping the sophisticated Air Force communications and information systems functioning at top level.
