(15 Jun 2016) Moscow residents reacted to the warning to Russian football fans to behave after unrest at their team's match against England last Saturday in Marseille. Alexander Baunov, analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Centre claimed on Wednesday that the hooligans, who are usually linked with neo-Nazis and other extremist groups, are supervised by the Russian state in order to avoid street protests. Baunov said that according to his information, the fans were told to "show strength to Europe" at Euro 2016 by the state. Russian fans were detained on Tuesday near Nice as they were heading by bus to Lille before Wednesday's Russia-Slovakia match. Local authorities said police stopped the fans to see whether any hooligans were among them. The French police action followed violent clashes between Russia and England fans in Marseille ahead of their teams' European Championship opener, a 1-1 draw on Saturday night. Football radio commentator, Pyots Shadrin said it was impossible to control all the fans adding "it cannot be done neither by the Russian Football Union nor probably by the French police." There was no repeat of the mass violence in Lille where Russia lost to Slovakia 2-1 on Wednesday. Any more trouble from the fans and UEFA has warned Russian football authorities that the team could be expelled from Euro 2016.
