Seamus Heaney Poetry Reading by Shanid. SEAMUS HEANEY (1939-2013) Born Seamus Justin Heaney in Tamniaran, Northern Ireland. Father was a cattle-farmer, his mother's family worked in linen-mills. Educated at Anahorish Primary School, St. Columb's College (scholarship) and Queen's University Belfast (1957). Heaney went into teaching after university while continuing to write poetry. Married Marie Devlin in 1965. Heaney's break through came with the critical success of 'Death of a Naturalist' (1966). For the next couple of decades Heaney alternated between lecturing around the world and being a full time writer. He taught at Harvard (1985), Oxford Professor of Poetry (1989), other academic honours followed. He was awarded The Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. Died in 2013 in Dublin, Ireland; such was his impact as a writer and a man, his funeral was broadcast live on Irish television. Heaney is recognised as one of the major poets of the 20th century.
