We begin by exploring pre-hepatic jaundice, which results from excessive breakdown of red blood cells and the subsequent increase in unconjugated bilirubin levels, as seen in hemolytic anemias. We then move to hepatic jaundice, where the liver’s ability to conjugate or excrete bilirubin is impaired due to intrinsic liver disease such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or genetic disorders like Gilbert’s syndrome. Here, we discuss how both unconjugated and conjugated bilirubin can accumulate depending on the underlying defect. Finally, we cover post-hepatic (obstructive) jaundice, which occurs when bile flow is blocked after it leaves the liver, leading to elevated conjugated bilirubin levels. Common causes include gallstones, pancreatic tumors, or biliary strictures.
