How Will These Young Journalists Change The World?

In early September, twelve young journalists arrived in New York City from different parts of the world to cover the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. These are the journalists selected for the Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship (RAF). The Fellowship, formally known as the DPI Training Programme for Broadcasters and Journalists from Developing Countries, was mandated by the GA Resolution in 1980, and renamed in 2003 in honor of the 29-year-old Jordanian public information officer who was killed in the 19 August 2003 bombing in Baghdad. The Fellowship is a unique opportunity for young working journalists from developing countries and countries with economies in transition to cover the opening of the General Assembly for their news outlets. One of the Fellows is Aminata Sanyang, a journalist working for the National Broadcaster of the Gambia (GRTS). Aminata covers on diverse issues and uses her platforms to empower women, children, and youth. Another Fellow is Redwan Ahmed, a freelance journalist from Bangladesh. Redwan has extensively reported on the Rohingya refugee crisis, human rights violations, and domestic elections for several international outlets. He received the 22nd Human Rights Press Awards for his Rohingya coverage for Agence France-Presse. The Fellowship ended on 29 September 2023, but the journalists will continue to report on UN issues in their own media outlets. #journalism
