In 2021 McGowan Environmental successfully completed stages 1 and 2 of the challenging Upper River Nith Restoration project and this video provides an overview of the specialist works undertaken. The project demonstrates how improvements to river habitats can be combined with measures to help reduce flood risk. Existing embankments were re-located with new set-back embankments created re-using materials wherever possible. The new flood plain created between the river and the set-back embankments was profiled, re-turfed, seeded and planted as per the agreed design. McGowan Environmental were appointed as Principal Contractor and we worked closely with Tweed Forum (Landowner Representative), SEPA (Project Funder), Royal Haskoning DHV (Project Manager) and Cbec Eco Engineering Ltd (Contractor’s Designer) throughout the project. Thanks to our friends at Scotland: The Big Picture for producing the video and to Ewan Richardson (Royal Haskoning DHV) for his contribution. *The River Nith is located in South-West Scotland. It rises in East Ayrshire between Enoch Hill and Prickeny Hill at an altitude of 425m (1400 feet) above sea-level and flows generally south-eastwards for 71 miles (112 km) before falling into the Solway Firth 14 miles (22 km) south of Dumfries where it forms a 10 mile (16 km) estuary.
