South of Rivendell LOTR Location📍Kahurangi national park 1800m+ Elevation Gain 18km one way 2+days (Warning!!!!!!) Good navigation, map reading skills, bush bashing and required river crossing. Starting on the heaphy track (Golden bay) head to Shakespeare flat 8km the Shakespeare track is over grown in places and does require extra care while heading down to the river Once there head south down the Aorere river 2.5km river crossing required so isn't recommended if there has been rain or coming rain. River crossing skills is a must. See photo for ridge we chose Once on the ridge you have 6/7km of off track navigation the first 3ish km is faster tracking the last 3 requires abit more fighting to get through thick scrub dense bush and big boulders (long pants and tops recommend) be prepared for 60minute an hr pace. Once out of the tree line you are hit with huge rocks that seem out of this world with stone like fingers from giants. 360 Views of the dragons teeth )(Clark peak) (Mount Taranaki) (farewell spit) (Mount Perry) and beyond. This is also a lord of the rings film location - south of Rivendell. Head back the same way you came :)
