(1) For undergrad- I had to apply from my home country (Zim) since it was my first SA study permit; (2) Honours - I applied for a renewal in SA, 3 months before my first permit expired. (3) Masters - I applied for a new permit while residing in Eswatini. You can apply from there if you are a citizen or acknowledged temporary resident (your Swazi dependent's, work, or study permit will be required as proof). (4) PhD (twice) - First time I applied from Zim and they gave me an 8 month visa. Second time around I applied from Eswatini and got the rest of my 2 years stamped in the passport. (5) Postdoc - I applied for this one in SA, 3 months before my second PhD permit expired.
