Following the refugee crises of 2015-2016 and the forced migration from Ukraine in 2022, European and North American countries have implemented various policies and programs to address the needs of new residents. While Polish cities have limited experience in managing migration, other nations like Germany, Norway, Italy and Czechia have longer traditions and more established frameworks that Poland can learn from. Migration policies in these countries involve both public and private sectors, with initiatives that range from centralized government strategies to grassroots efforts. These approaches differ across more and less centralized states. As Poland faces the challenges of accommodating new arrivals, especially after the 2022 Ukraine crisis, the experiences of other European countries provide valuable lessons and inspiration for developing effective migration and integration policies. Main questions: 1. What integration policies for forced migrants (with different legal statuses and protection forms) are there in your country? a. Who designs the policies? b. How are they implemented: Who implements them (e.g. public institutions at a central/local levels)? c. In what domains, e.g. labour market, housing, education, healthcare, do you have a self-settlement model or the opposite? d. Which populations do they target? 2. What is the division of responsibilities between local and central levels over integration policies? 3. How are the policies addressing the vulnerable groups of forced migrants, e.g. people with disabilities? 4. What lessons learned are there for integration policies from your case? What would you have done differently if you could? What would you keep the way it is? Guest speakers: Professor Magdalena Nowicka, DeZIM German Centre for Integration and Migration Research, Berlin, Germany Dr Marie Jelínková, Assistant Professor, Department of Public and Social Policy, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Prague, Czechia Dr Melissa Moralli, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Business Law, University of Bologna, Italy Dr Vilde Hernes, Senior Researcher at the OsloMet, Oslo, Norway Professor Jennifer Hyndman, Associate Vice-President for Research & Innovation, York University, Toronto, Canada Organisers: The Laboratory of Urban and Regional Migration Policies & Migration Policies Research Unit at the Centre of Migration Research of the University of Warsaw (CMR UW), the Migration Academy of the Migration Consortium, the Union of Polish Metropolises, and the Research Committee 46 “Migration and Citizenship” of the International Political Science Association (IPSA).
