Stealth Hypersonic Mach 6 fighter jet by 2025 - Son of Darkstar Mach 6 Darkstar "Son of Blackbird" is a fast, stealthy jet that looks like the futuristic aircraft in the popular movie. In just a few years, manned hypersonic flight could become a reality if the enigmatic Darkstar aircraft, piloted by Tom Cruise in Maverick, proves to be accurate. The existence of the aircraft has not been officially confirmed, despite its Hollywood appearance. Having said that, concepts, drawings, and "renderings" were made public, and an aircraft of some kind flew in the film. Therefore, it is possible that a Lockheed-designed, covert Mach 6 Darkstar "Son of Blackbird" high-speed, stealthy jet that resembles the futuristic aircraft featured in the popular movie exists. Given that hypersonic weapons are just now beginning to be developed, manned "hypersonic" flight would indicate a significant advancement. It's difficult enough to engineer a projectile to maintain hypersonic speeds and stay "on-course" for its intended trajectory in extremely hot conditions but sustained "manned" hypersonic flight might not be too far off. Since the new "possible" aircraft could be considered a successor to the revolutionary high-speed SR-71 Blackbird, many have dubbed it an SR-72 "Son-of-Blackbird." According to Lockheed's paper, the new "Son of Blackbird" is expected to take to the sky by 2025. Top Gun Maverick may have included a manned Mach 6 Darkstar "son of Blackbird" who was secretive. Although there is no concrete proof that such an aircraft exists, Tom Cruise's fast jet in the film does resemble an image of the aircraft that Lockheed Martin posted. A manned or unmanned Blackbird follow-on would make sense considering that it would enable hypersonic flight and capitalize on decades of technological advancements since the Blackbird's introduction in the 1960s. Given that SR-72, the son of the 1960s Blackbird, would only need to reach Mach 5 or faster to be classified as hypersonic, it makes sense that the Blackbird's incredible Mach 3 speed served as the foundation for its successor. It would be a tremendous achievement if the SR-72 could perform manned hypersonic flight since it would need to develop possibly unheard-of technology that would allow a person to travel at Mach 6 hypersonic speeds. With a rounded fuselage and a blended wing-body, the images of DarkStar that are currently available do seem sleek and stealthy. Even without stealth, it seems unlikely that a manned jet that can reach sustained hypersonic speeds of Mach 6 would be able to elude enemy air defenses purely based on speed. Of course, stealth would always be advantageous, but at hypersonic speeds, an aircraft would probably move from one radar aperture, or "field of regard," to another so quickly that ground-based radar would have very little opportunity to create a continuous "track" on the aircraft for targeting.
