The path of food through the body begins in the mouth. This is where digestion starts. As we chew our food, our saliva contains enzymes that begin breaking down carbohydrates. THEN TO THE ESOPHAGUS Next, our chewed-up food travels down the oesophagus, a muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. It's like a conveyor belt for our food. ARRIVE AT THE STOMACH Here, powerful stomach acids and enzymes break down the food into a soupy mixture called chyme. HEAD TO THE SMALL INTESTINE journey continues into the small intestine, which is the longest part of the digestive system. It's where most of the nutrient absorption happens. Tiny finger-like structures called villi line the walls to help absorb nutrients into our bloodstream. ON TO THE LARGE INTESTINE Here, water is absorbed from the remaining chyme, making it thicker. The large intestine is also home to billions of helpful bacteria that aid digestion. ENDING AT THE RECTUM AND ANUS The journey ends at the rectum and anus. Waste products are stored in the rectum until they are ready to be eliminated from the body through the anus. And that's it, our quick journey through the digestive system! It's a remarkable process that allows our bodies to get the nutrients they need from our food. Related Topics: Learn the best ways to stay hydrated • Are You Making This Mistake? Stay Hydrated...
