One example is putting off choosing a dentist because you’re spending so much time considering your options. 2.Agoraphobia vs Social Anxiety Both are about being anxious when going out in public. Agoraphobia is the fear of being physically trapped and not being able to leave if you start to feel panicky. Examples include not wanting to sit in a moving car, or the middle of a restaurant booth, or the middle of a movie theater row. Social anxiety is the fear of being negatively judged, or scrutinized, by others. 3. Acute Stress Disorder, vs Adjustment Disorder, vs PTSD All of these are stress that persist after an initial traumatic experience. For Acute Stress disorder, the even happened a month ago or less. For adjustment disorder, the even happened between 1 and 6 months ago For PTSD, the event happened 6 months ago or more. 4. Dependent Personality Disorder vs Borderline Personality Disorder Both are based on a fear of abandonment. Dependent Personality Disorder does not look like hostility or irritability. This person is clingy, will have no opinions of their own, and just to go along with someone because they crave acceptance. Borderline, is characterized by having mid-level psychotic behaviors, and mid-level neurotic behaviors. Psychosis like being intense and reactive, or quick to change extreme opinions about someone. Neurosis like short-term paranoia. 5. Bipolar ONE vs Bipolar TWO Bipolar One is characterized by having depression next to 1 week of mania. Mania looks like someone on cocaine - very elevated mood, energetic, irritability, grandiosity, very talkative, goal-directed. Bipolar TWO has depression, but instead of mania, it has HYPO-mania, which means lower-intensity. 6.Oppositional Defiant Disorder vs Conduct Disorder vs Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, vs Intermittent Explosive Disorder. A parent walks into your office and says their kid is impossible to handle. Which one of these is it? If the kid has Oppositional Defiant Disorder, they are argumentative with authority figures. If they have Conduct Disorder, they bully other kids, or are cruel to animals Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder – Big violent Outbursts. If this goes untreated, they might grow up to have Intermittent Explosive Disorder, which is an adult diagnosis. 7.General Anxiety Disorder with Depression vs Major Depressive Disorder with Anxiety Which is the main diagnosis and which is the specifier? Which is the burger, and which is the topping? It all depends on the number of criteria. You need 6 things for the diagnosis. If you have fewer, it’s a specifier, a topping. 2 = mild, 3=moderate, 4/5 = moderate/severe. Here are the key symptoms of Anxiety: Big uncontrollable worry, Restlessness, Muscle tension, Can’t concentrate, Fear of the future, Fear of losing self-control, and irritability. Here are the key symptoms of depression: Low mood, hopelessness, low energy, changes in sleep/appetite, loss of interest, low self esteem, and irritability.
