The interest did calm down for a bit and he even went to Rayo Vallecano for a few years, however after a very convincing stay at the club, being the captain of their youth squads and all, Atlético decided to bring him back this season. If things couldn't get better he also decided to finally represent the Philippines national team and seems like the nation's biggest hope at the moment. Mainly a RB, during his stay with the national he did play on all spots of the wing (RB/LB/RW/LW) and didn't have any performance drops during any of the position swaps. Quite versatile. Played the most minutes as a RW, having a more defensive stance while on the defensive process, helping to close the lane. On the offensive process, in the 1st stage, played with width, dropping deeper so the team could play more higher tempo and shorter football, but after reaching the opponents half, inverting and occupying the half-spaces. Typical south east asian body build, short and light frame, very fast and nimble, good bursts of speed in short spaces and speed maintenance during sharp turns, not the most indicated for runs over long distances. He did look with more physical potential then the average philippino. Decent amount of flair, can create unbalances on the opponents defense with his inward runs, mostly coming from his own half. Impressive football IQ, beyond his ability to play many positions and roles with consistency, also showed a lot of interesting details with his movements that uncover a truly intelligent player. Great space wareness and trustworthy off the ball movement but doing a little things to give himself space and lose his marker or even spotting dangerous plays way ahead of time to try and stop. Good technique with his first touch and body orientation away from pressure. Terrific work rate, highly involved in defending and attacking while keeping a steady intensity and ability to make runs into space from deep consistently and track back. The usual with most asian players, strength is going to be a problem from here on out but I reckon since he's so young, he'll get around it by the time he has matured. Very loose passing, did cost a few transitions and missed passes in prohibited zones, but he does have potential, didn't perform a lot of crosses but they were all dangerous and high quality, quite possibly this is due to the competitive level difference he is normally used to. I know the Philippines are pretty excited about Santi, it's not everyday you see a low ranking nation with a prospect in a champions league team, altough I don't believe he'll be a regular with Atlético any time soon, I'm sure he'll be the face of the national for many year to come, stamping a new chapter of the football history of the country. #SantiRublico #AtléticoMadrdi #Azkals #scouting
