Welcome to North Adams, Massachusetts. Named after Declaration of independence signer Samuel Adams, this busy little town is gaining a reputation in New England as a bastion for the arts. Thanks to the 1999 Mass MOCA This once sleepy mill town is now the primary destination for art lovers. The town's fortunes continued through the Great depression until the 1980s, when the Sprague Electric Company closed its doors in 1985. It was in this gigantic sprawling facility we find the MASS Moca today. Initially the space was considered as an option to show pieces of art that were considered waaaaayyy to large to hang in conventional galleries. It was Thomas Krans, then director of the Williams College museum of art , who initiated the repurposing of this facility along with the The Town of North Adams.
