Learn to Read Biblical Hebrew | Season 2 Syllables - Part 1 ~ Syllables are considered the phonological "building blocks" of words. They are the smallest units of pronunciation having one vowel sound. We often take the idea of breaking words into syllables for granted. On the one end this is because we can 'hear' where syllables divide, but on the other end because we 'know' the rules. Hebrew syllables are defined by at least one consonant followed by one vowel sound (which is indicated by a vowel marker either below and/or to the left of a Hebrew letter). Hebrew syllables are categorized as follows: 1. Open Syllables Defined by ONE consonant (C) plus ONE vowel (v) expressed as: C-v Open syllables usually have long vowel sounds. 2. Closed Syllables Defined as a consonant (C) followed by a vowel (v), followed (closed) by another consonant (C): C-v-C Closed syllables usually have shorter vowel sounds. 3. Rule of Accentuation Hebrew words are accented on the last or final syllable of a word, except where the accent is otherwise indicated by an 'accent marker' - something we find frequently in the printed Biblical Hebrew text. Between open and closed syllables, and with the rule of accentuation, we can easily pronounce any Hebrew word.
