By making greater use of digital technology, GPs and practice staff up and down the country have been able to treat and support their patients in new ways during Covid-19. Since March 2020, GP practices have been rapidly upgrading or expanding their digital healthcare capabilities to keep people well, while maintaining social distancing. Video consultations are now available in GP practices that cover 99% of the population in England, up from less than 5% prior to COVID-19. Online consultations, where a patient can contact their GP practice directly via the internet, are now available in almost 6,000 practices, covering 90% of the population. Patients have embraced this new experience, particularly those with health conditions who in the past would have had to travel to a GP surgery for multiple appointments. Likewise, GPs, practice nurses and their staff have shown great flexibility and the ability to adapt to ensure they can keep on caring for patients, embracing a 'service improvement mindset' around digital healthcare to successfully embed new ways of working into daily care for patients. Early feedback shows that patients are using video appointments and online consultations to get care, report illnesses, ask for advice on managing symptoms, and make requests. GPs are encouraged to maintain this improved digital access for patients. Digital tools have also enabled GPs and their staff to work with each other differently and more efficiently. Non-digital access to primary care, including by phone, is still available and general practice and other NHS services are open to see patients face to face where they need it.
