Afghanistan - Bomb kills at least 30 near girls' school in Afghan capital / Death toll in Kabul scho

(25 Jun 2021) STORYLINE A bomb exploded near a girl's school in a majority Shiite district of west Kabul on May 8th, killing at least 30 people, many them young pupils between 11 and 15 years old, Afghan government spokesmen said. The Taliban condemned the attack apparently aimed at civilians, and denied any responsibility, instead blaming the Islamic State group. Ambulances rushed to evacuate wounded from the scene of the blast near Syed Al-Shahda school, in the Shiite majority neighborhood of Dasht-e-Barchi. Angry crowds attacked the ambulances and even beat health workers, according to Health Ministry spokesman Ghulam Dastigar Nazari, who implored residents to cooperate and allow ambulances free access to the site. At one nearby hospital, Associated Press journalists saw at least 20 dead bodies lined up in hallways and rooms, with dozens of wounded people and families of victims pressing through the facility. Outside the Muhammad Ali Jinnah Hospital, dozens of people lined up to donate blood, while family members checked casualty lists posted on the walls. Government officials said at least 50 people were wounded, and that the casualty toll could rise. The attack occurred just as many saw their Ramadan fast come to an end for the day. *** Afghan authorities say a bomb exploded near a girls' school in a majority Shiite district of west Kabul on May 8th, killing at least 30 people, many of them young pupils between 11 and 15 years old. The Taliban has condemned the attack and denied any responsibility. Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said the death toll was expected to rise further. Ambulances evacuated the wounded as relatives and residents screamed at authorities near the scene of the blast at Syed Al-Shahda school, in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said. The bombing, apparently aimed to cause maximum civilian carnage, adds to fears that violence in the war-wrecked country could escalate as the U.S. and NATO end nearly 20 years of military engagement. *** The death toll in a horrific bombing at a girls' school in the Afghan capital has soared to 50, many of them pupils between 11 and 15 years old, the Interior Ministry said May 9th. The number of wounded in May 8th's attack has also climbed to more than 100, said Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian. Three explosions outside the school entrance struck as students were leaving for the day. The blasts occurred in a mostly Shiite neighborhood in the west of the capital. The Taliban denied responsibility, condemning the attack. No one has yet claimed May 8th's bombings, but Arian said the Taliban were responsible. "The Taliban are behind this criminal and unforgiveable act of terror, as they have done in similar attacks on Kabul university and university students in Logar province and other parts of the country, which caused civilian casualties," he said Sunday. "This attack was a suicide car bomb attack, carried out by Taliban, creating this huge crime." The attack targeted Afghanistan's ethnic Hazaras who dominate the western Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, where the bombings occurred. Most Hazaras are Shiite Muslims. The area has been hit by brutal attacks targeting minority Shiites and most often claimed by the Islamic State affiliate operating in the country. The radical Sunni Muslim group has declared war on Afghanistan's Shiites. Washington blamed IS for a vicious attack last year in a maternity hospital in the same area that killed pregnant women and newborn babies. *** According to Afghan police, the bomb exploded as prayers had begun. #Afghanistan #Taliban #Bomb #School Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
