A comparison between a vintage JMI VOX AC30 and the Strymon Iridium. The amp is a non-top boost, bass model - so not exactly what the Strymon was modeled after. However, let's find out how close they can get. Chapters: 00:00 Gear used 00:24 Brilliant channel - 12 o'clock 02:02- Brilliant channel - 2 o'clock: 03:42 Normal channel - 2 o'clock: 05:28 Brilliant and normal channel - 2 o'clock The idea was to keep the signal as dry as possible for an honest comparison. No effects, no eq and no compression in post. Tone cut is down both on the Vox as on the Iridium. No smoke, no mirrors. Guitar signal is a Fender Telecaster recorded on a Ditto looper. Exact same signal going into the Vox and the Iridium. Signal output paths are: Vox into Torpedo Captor, then into UA Apollo, into Logic, into IR (York Audio VX30 212 BLU 57m-CE 1); Iridium going mono into UA Apollo, into Logic, into IR (York Audio VX30 212 BLU 57m-CE 1). If you've read this far: you're a nerd. So here are some other fun facts. The AC30 is a mid-sixties JMI grey panel, non-Top boost, bass version. It was recapped and serviced recently, however some sizzle can still be heard on the output. The amp is almost 60 years old, so hey - that's part of the charm, right? Output tubes are recent Sovtek EL84Ms. V1 and V2 tubes are vintage Brimars. Other preamp tubes are vintage Siemens and Philips. Transformers and choke are Woden. Speakers in this amp are T1088 silver bells. Cheers!
