Malcolm Goldstein’s “Jade Mountain Soundings” (1983), performed by Collin Oldham (cello) at EXTRADITION PLAYS GOLDSTEIN concert 4 of 4, held at Leaven Community in Portland, Oregon, USA, on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Combining graphics and text instructions, “Jade Mountain Soundings” focuses on “aspects of sound-quality/texture expressed through the performance of a bowed string instrument: the physicality of generating the string to sound. Bow pressure, bow speed and bow placement are fundamental considerations in the sound of this music. The graphic score indicates, by thickness and curve of line, changes in these aspects of performance technique. The lines, similarly conceived of as phrases, are always realized as sustained (legato, lyrical) bowings—as varieties of breathing (the bow upon / within the string). The music can also be conceived as a kind of meditation.” The instrumentalist uses only four self-selected pitches throughout, each fixed in its specific registration but performable on all the strings, allowing exploration of variances in sound-quality/texture. Based in Portland, Oregon, Extradition is an ensemble and concert series that works at the intersection of composition and improvisation, deliberation and chance, clarity and silence. EXTRADITION PLAYS GOLDSTEIN was a four-concert exploration of works by composer, violinist, and improvisor Malcolm Goldstein (b. 1936, Brooklyn, NY), staged between October 19, 2024, and February 15, 2025.
