Barley Wine Tasting Notes. The Barley Wine, our foray into high gravity beermaking. Barley wine is really just a higher proof beer, you know that, right? Many people seem to think barley wine isn't hopped, but it is. They also think it's still, as in... not carbonated. Nope, it's carbonated too. So why is it called a barley wine and not just... beer? Well, blame the government, who feels the need to tax everything and categorize things according to how they should be sold. Due to the higher alcohol content or ABV of barleywine, they tax it at a different rate than beer, and so... we have beer and barleywine as different things according to "the man" when in reality, they're the same thing.
