Former warden David Mills discusses some of Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary’s most violent inmates, inmate behavior, prison culture, faith, threats against himself and staff, and what it took to serve as warden inside one of Tennessee’s most dangerous prisons. David was selected Warden of the Year in the early 2000s and has written two books—The Nature of the Beast and The Nature of the Beast Continues—reflecting on his long career in corrections. His work offers firsthand insight into leadership, violence, and survival inside some of the state’s toughest prison environments. I would like to personally thank David for taking the time to join me for this interview, especially considering he had been released from the hospital less than 24 hours earlier while recovering from a serious and painful medical issue.
