During the 20th century, a vast amount of research, led to the development of the theory behind time domain and frequency domain dielectric response techniques for the condition assessment of multiple insulation materials. The practical application of the dielectric response for power transformer diagnostics takes a major step forward thanks to the advent of improved computational platforms and power electronics. The first Insulation Diagnostics Analyzer (IDA) designed for field use comes to the market in 1997. The continuous growth of application within the industry made it imperative the standardization of this prominent testing technique called Dielectric Frequency Response (DFR). Therefore, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) developed the document IEEE C57.161-2018 – “Guide for Dielectric Frequency Response Test”, based on the preceding work of CIGRE and the expertise of individuals who volunteered to provide a well-structured guide for the application of DFR in factory and field. In this webinar, the importance of DFR, its history, fundamentals and standardization for oil-immersed paper insulation of power transformers will be discussed.
