A visit to the busy Somerset county town of Taunton on a chilly winter's day! Taunton is the county town of Somerset, England. It is a market town in and has a minster church. Its population in 2011 was 64,621. The town lies on the River Tone between the Quantock, Blackdown and Brendon hills, and is 38 miles (61 km) south-west of Bristol, 28 miles (45 km) north-east of Exeter, 63 miles (101 km) north-east of Plymouth and 40 miles (64 km) north-west of Weymouth. Like most of South West England, Taunton has a temperate climate, wetter and milder than the rest of the country. The annual mean temperature is about 10 °C (50.0 °F). Seasonal temperature variation is less extreme because of the adjacent sea. The summer months of July and August have mean daily maxima of about 21 °C (69.8 °F). In winter, mean minimum temperatures of 1 °C (33.8 °F) or 2 °C (35.6 °F) are common.
