The documentary Routes to Roots: 1960s Croydon showcases Anglo-Indian and South Asian participants presenting their migration stories about journeying from India and beyond to build a home in Croydon. “I was at the impressionable age where I had to give up everything, all my friends You spent all the money you had to come here and that was it, there was no turning back” We hope that by sharing these vital stories, we highlight the diversity of UK South Asian Heritage and challenge assumptions and stereotypes surrounding these communities in the UK. Routes to Roots is inspired by Maya Productions’ musical in development, Benny and the Greycats. Inspired by Artistic Director Suzanne Gorman’s family history, the production explores the migration experience of Anglo-Indian communities, telling the story of a family of Anglo-Indian railway workers who swap playing in a swing band in South India, for a new life in 1960s Sheffield. “There's a lot more to Anglo-Indian life and the more people who talk about it, the more there will be an understanding of the Anglo-Indian community.” Documentary by Little Red Hen Films.
