Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) outbreaks are increasingly threatening banana production in Uganda. Devastating effects on food security since the banana is a staple food crop that provides up to 25% of daily caloric intake (http://www.fao.org). Disease caused by the bacteria, Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum (Xcm) Current farming practices are ineffective at alleviating the problem. Some promote antibiotic resistance and environment contamination (chemical pesticides). Undocumented indigenous practices i.e use of urine and ash commonly used by local farmers may have therapeutic benefits on the banana weevil, which also causes banana wilt, and NOT the bacteria, Xcm. These claims will be backed up with science later on in the project. Urgent need for alternative and eco-friendly methods that promote use biocontrol or natural pesticides (bacteriophages and plant extract based pesticides) to control BXW.
