In this video, I review a two-bar set of 160-watt (320-watt Total) Under-Canopy lighting option from IQ Horticulture. Under-canopy lighting is a hot topic right now and there are a myriad options available on the market. I think the sweet spot for wattage is between 120 and 150 however the 160W gives all the wiggle room you could need and they are fully dimmable. My stance on undercanopy lighting is starting to shift from unnecessary to viable option (in some cases). It is fact that the more total PPF (PAR emission from fixtures) you have, the more potential yield you can gain. I have heard it argued that undercanopy lighting can offset defoliation and labor needs justifying the expense and added infrastructure at operator level. The primary concern for me is that last point, having lights, wiring and fixtures at grower level. This can be a hazard as well as added maintenance requirement. Most cultivation facilities operate on high voltage power and while all connections are water-tight, never put it past a technician to find a way to destroy something. Also, the matter of leaf litter, debris and microclimate for pest and pathogens to harbor is still a concern. Where I have come around on the topic is that in facilities that are already optimized without the ability or funding to expand their canopy square footage, this can be an added boon to production. However, until a grower is yielding 2+ grams per watt dry sellable product, I don't see this being a feasible solution. The only counter point here is that the lower flower sites will produce more dense and higher quality flower even in a system that is not yet optimized. For me the jury is still out and I'll be doing a grow journal with half of the garden getting under-canopy treatment to see the difference in flower set and headaches.
