Another railtour would grace Sussex this winter this time charted by UK railtours. Its aim was to travel down a few rarely visted to railtour lines with the end destination being Uckfield here in dearest Sussex. The tour would be dubbed a simply awkward week to match the awkward nature of this tour. The tour itself would start at Peterborough and would work its way down to London. Weaving through fabric of lines that make up London, we first capture the tour powering off a speed restriction at Virgina Water. From here the tour would work to London Victoria in order to commence the next leg of the tour. The tour would work down to Purley where the contist would work up the steep 1:103 gradient towards Caterham, we capture the tour through the small station of Whytleleafe South. A reversal would take place back to Purely where they’d head down another less visited branchline: Tattenham Corner. The banks here are steeper and would sure put 37407 to the test as she battled the 1:83 climb towards Kingswood Tunnel. Another quick reversal took place here so we quickly caught the tour once more at Tadworth. From Tadworth the 37s took the tour back to Purely to take the consist into Sussex via the East Grinstead Line. Here they’d tackle the steepest bank of all the banks encountered on this journey: Dormans Bank. The bank into East Grinstead at its steepest point is 1:65 and the 37s handled it as if it were nothing. They’d take a quick pitstop at East Grinstead station before heading onto the Uckfield Line. The Uckfield Line, formally known as the Wealden Line, currently is a shadow of its former self. The Wealden Line was a nickname given to a series of once interconnected lines which ran through Wealden. Starting off at Lewes, the line would travel through Culver Junction, this junction separated the Lewes to London line from the East Grinstead - Lewes line, part of this line is now preserved as the Bluebell Railway. Continuing past the junction would land you at the villages of Barcombe Mills & Isfield. Currently the Lavender Line occupy a mile section of line from Isfield northwards, aiming to restore the missing link from Uckfield to Lewes. From here the Wealden line continued through Uckfield and past Redgate Mill Junction, the Junction for Cuckoo Line services towards Heathfield, Hailsham & Eastbourne. The Spa Valley Railway currently occupy the section between Tunbridge Wells & Eridge. As per the infamous Beeching Cuts: the Wealden Line slowly got taken away. The Cuckoo Line closing from Eridge to Hailsham in 1965 & the Uckfield to Lewes section closing in 1969. Only the line stemming from Hurst Green junction to Uckfield remained. In 1990 following cost saving measures, the now Uckfield Line was made single tracked across the vast majority of the line bar a couple places such as Crowborough. Infact the line itself is not even electrified. It is due to this single track nature of the line that railtours are such a very rare occurrence with the last one occurring in 2016 with the Hastings Unit. This tour would also serve as the first locomotive hauled railtour to Uckfield since 2013 when 44932 & 34046 top and tailed to Uckfield as part of the Blue Belle explorer tour but I digress. For me I’ve always wanted to see something tackle the infamous Crowborough Bank. Being 1:75, it was the first place I was gonna head to on the branch to Uckfield and it paid off with a stunning performance up the bank. The return from Uckfield was equally as impressive as she shot up the bank in the amazing sunset. Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chaileystow...
