The Pentagon is reportedly considering designating Anthropic a “supply chain risk” — a term normally reserved for foreign adversaries — after a clash over AI safeguards and military use. According to an exclusive report from Axios, the U.S. Department of Defense is frustrated that Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, has placed restrictions on how the company’s AI model Claude can be used within classified military systems. At the center of the dispute is whether AI tools should be available for “all lawful purposes,” including surveillance and autonomous weapons systems, or whether corporate guardrails should limit those uses. Anthropic is currently the only frontier large language model cleared to operate on classified U.S. military networks. Claude has reportedly already been used in sensitive operations, including the Maduro raid. If the Pentagon formally labels Anthropic a supply chain risk, it could force contractors across the defense ecosystem to remove the company’s technology. This is not just a contract dispute.
