How to teach Rote Counting and Rational Counting

This video is about how to teach counting to young children. Building a strong foundation in counting is important because it helps to build a strong number sense in children. With a strong number sense, children are able to understand the various integrated relationships about numbers. This will help them develop to love for math, and a strong confidence in solving problems which is an important 21st century skill that we want to nurture in children. Children exhibit common problems in counting. i.e. double count and skip count. Therefore, children need a lot of practise in counting and an effective way is to learn through play by playing games. Two games are shared on rote counting and rational counting using common items that can be found at home or in school. The role of the caregiver in engaging the children by learning through play is important as it will motivate the children's desire to explore and discover concepts that we want them to learn. Asking questions during play is also an important role that the caregiver should note.
