Andrea Antal, MD, PhD, University of Goettingen, Göttingen, Germany, discusses the growing use of transcranial electrical brain stimulation (tES) as a therapeutic modality. There are two methods: direct current and alternating current stimulation. Direct current stimulation is more frequently used, this requires the use of two electrodes and can be used to treat neurological disorders with abnormal cortical excitability including migraine, chronic pain, and stroke. Transcranial alternating current stimulation is used to change intrinsic cortical oscillations and induce synaptic plasticity. Prof. Antal's recent work has been looking at the potential of alternating current stimulation for delayed progression of cognitive decline. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
