The Child Help Desk (CHD) is a booth that has been established at railway stations across India to provide assistance to children who are runaways, missing/lost, trafficked, or in any other vulnerable situation where they require support. A Standard Operating Procedure was formulated in March, 2015 and a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Women and Child Development on 19.05.2015. Towards implementation of the above SOP, one of the operative instructions was to set up Child Help desks/ Kiosks/ Booths across railway stations. These are manned by trained CHILDLINE personnel, which provide assistance to children in rehabilitating and restoring children. The CHD is operational 24x7 at 134+ railway stations. It is imperative to highlight the significance of the CHD and the CHILDLINE team, which operates in the busy routes of the Indian Railways to safeguard children. Being in a high footfall area as a railway platform, not only does this mechanism prevent abuse or link a child with statutory bodies and services, it also provides large scale awareness about how a child can be helped and thereby promotes civic participation. The CHILD Help Desk at railway stations has assisted may children who were lost or missing and prevented child from being trafficking.
