The University Grants Commission introduced a bill aimed at the promotion of equality in higher education institutions. After the bill came into effect, it faced strong opposition across the country. Eventually, the Supreme Court has now put a stay on the bill. Earlier, the University Grants Commission had introduced a similar regulations in 2012, but it was not properly implemented in higher education institutions. During this period, promising young individuals such as Rohith Vemula and Payal Tadvi were driven to the extreme step of taking their own lives due to the caste-based discrimination they faced. According to the petition filed in the Supreme Court, it was the Supreme Court itself that had recommended making these regulations more stringent.
