A Sacred Mountain of Many Faiths Located in the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary in the Central Highlands, Adam's Peak is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It holds profound, varying significance to different religions: Buddhists: Believe the impression on the summit is the sacred footprint left by Lord Buddha during his third visit to Sri Lanka. The Pilgrimage and the Climb The pilgrimage season traditionally runs from December to April. Thousands of devotees ascend the mountain—often starting around 2:00 or 3:00 am—to reach the summit before dawn. The journey involves climbing over 5,000 to 5,500 concrete steps, a challenging feat that physically tests pilgrims. Despite the hardship, the trail is filled with positive, communal energy, with stalls, lights, and fellow worshippers providing motivation. he Magnificent Sunrise and Shadow The highlight of the climb is reaching the summit for sunrise. As the sun rises over the eastern horizon, the mountain casts a perfect triangular shadow, a breathtaking spectacle that seems to hover over the western landscape.
